dominika.nawrot@gmail.comFirst things first: I talk a lot.
I am a 22 year old Jersey girl, but I was born in Poland and am fully bi-lingual. I graduated from TCNJ with a degree in communications in 2008. The real world scares and bores me, and I'm doing my best to avoid it.
I go on crazy adventures.
Horses and photography are my passions. If you don't want to read the details, you can visit my photo blog.
More specifically, standardbreds are my life. I spent six years working at a training center in north Jersey before college took over. Through a series of coincidences, I found work at a breeding farm, Bluestone. I spent two years there, raising foals, prepping yearlings, and learning a lot about veterinary medicine. After a brief, and unfortunate, stint with thoroughbreds, I returned to my favorite breed. I now work as a trainer for the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF). I spend my days caring for and retraining standardbreds after their racing careers come to an end. You can learn more about the SRF at adoptahorse.org.
If you'd like to help these horses, but can't afford to adopt or sponser one, please use goodsearch.com for your online searches. Enter "Standardbred Retirement Foundation" as the charity you'd like to benefit.
Last, but not least, my life would be incomplete without my own standardbred, Oz the Great. Ozzy belonged to my old boss for the first six years of his life. Oz was born red bag and quickly became septic. After spending the first three months of his life at the Mid-Atlantic Equine Clinic, he decided he was sick of people, and he bit, kicked, and fought every way he knew how. I'd go in his stall with a feed bucket in one hand and a whip in the other. He was the only horse I've ever been afraid of, but gelding quickly changed that. Six years in training and he never set foot on the track... and not because he was slow. Ozzy is well-bred and damn fast, but he just didn't. want. to. He'd lay down when he heard his harness. He'd count laps on the track then bolt for home. He'd refuse to move a muscle. When I offered to take him off my boss's hands... he willingly agreed. Now, two years later, my puppy dog of a horse and I are starting a career in endurance. He's a willing and trustworthy partner, and his goofy antics make everyone laugh. We have many miles under our belts already, and I wouldn't trade him for the world.
